The Tradition of Valborg
Valborg, also known as Walpurgis Night, is traditionally celebrated on 30 April across Sweden. Communities gather outdoors to light bonfires, sing spring songs, and welcome the end of the long Nordic winter. The tradition has pre‑Christian roots, originally linked to rituals meant to protect against evil spirits and celebrate the return of light. Today it’s a lively, public celebration with strong cultural and academic significance, especially in university towns such as Uppsala, where students in white caps fill the streets in a joyful welcome to spring.
Join us in the Meadows as once again we bring the songs of Swedish spring and summer to Edinburgh,
